Pipe Decommissioning

Steve Vick International (SVI) has been providing products and services for the trenchless repair and renovation of gas pipes since 1981. Many of these products and techniques have been enhanced to decommission contaminated pipes on nuclear decommissioning projects.

The patented FOAMBAG™ system was developed by SVI as a safe and effective method of sealing off gas mains for abandonment and has become a gas industry standard technique.

The procedure has been adapted and successfully implemented to seal contaminated pipes of varying sizes, shapes and orientations at a number of sites including Sellafield and Chapelcross.

SVI manufacture FOAMBAG™ kits suitable for sealing diameters from 5mm to 36” and these kits are available for purchase where appropriate. Alternatively we can design bespoke FOAMBAGS™ for individual projects, to seal larger diameters and non-standard shapes.


High Integrity FOAMBAG™

Under Pressure Bespoke FOAMBAG™

A recent joint project with the nuclear industry has resulted in the development of the SVI High Integrity FOAMBAG™. It was developed to meet specific customer requirements and is now available to meet the most demanding of end user applications.
Installation involves strategically positioning the fabric bag and filling it with high performance resin foam. A chemical bond is formed between the pipe wall and the High Integrity FOAMBAG™ fabric shell.
This bond improves its mechanical performance, thus allowing it to withstand higher pressures, vibration and shock loadings.

Under Pressure Drill

The Steve Vick under pressure drill is a safe, airtight system for drilling pipes and ducts, it is used in conjunction with various airtight hot-tapping systems.
The drill can be manually, pneumatically or electrically powered to suit on-site conditions and can be configured to suit specific requirements.


The National Nuclear Laboratory has carried out tests on the cured foam used in Steve Vick International’s FOAMBAG™ and associated systems and have rated it as having an 8-10 year lifespan in an area with a background radiation level of 7–9Sv.
